Maharashtra is a multi-ethnic
canvas, with shrines of different religions dotting almost the
entire map of the state. Temples and mosques, churches and gurudwaras
attract the faithful by the millions every year. These destinations
are not merely religious places, but splendid showcases of art,
architecture and culture as well. Deserving special mention here
is the Varkari tradition which has flourished for more than 600
years. The Varkaris (devotees of Lord Vithoba who undertake this
pilgrimage every year), dressed simply in a dhoti-kurta or sari,
chant the name of God as they walk joyously from Alandi near Pune
to Pandharpur for some 260-odd km to reach their beloved Vithoba. |
